Overview

Study a range of graphic design techniques and processes, creating your own designs using both traditional materials and current technologies, researching and gathering a range of images and resources linked to a chosen theme for your personal assignments.  

Explore various areas of graphic communication throughout the design process, e.g.

  • Illustration  
  • Advertising & branding  
  • Packaging design  
  • Image manipulation  
  • Design layout for print and media  
  • Computer designed graphics and artwork.

Skills and Techniques:
 
Learn a variety of skills that prepare you for working in the creative/design sector, using industry standard software, from basic concept designs, to developing those ideas to more detailed layouts, finally producing digital pieces of artwork.   

Our learning environment supports working creatively with traditional materials (pencils, graphic markers & illustrator pens) along with up-to-date technical equipment (Adobe software, Apple macs, scanners and digital tablets etc).   

Key information

  • A minimum of seven GCSEs at grades A*-C, including English Language
  • To include at least one art based GCSE (or a portfolio of work).

Sessions are led by lecturer with the opportunity to use techniques learnt when working independently on own assignments. Self-motivation, good time management and submitting tasks to completion are useful transferable qualities gained during this course.  

To achieve a high level of success, extra time spent outside of timetabled hours adding and refining portfolio work will be needed and will see improvement in own completed work.

Coursework is assessed and reviewed through the year, with a final mark awarded after projects are completed and submitted. There is no written examination. Students are assessed on the written elements embedded within coursework.  

The Art and Design Foundation Diploma at Gower College Swansea.  

We have established healthy links with a number of universities, and host guests from various courses to deliver workshops and provide opportunities to help learners consider viable options for professional pathways within the creative industries.  

Successful students may use this qualification to gain access to further study. Graphic design, multi-media design, game design, advertising and branding, illustration are some options within the ever-expanding visual communication world.  

There is a £30 studio fee attached to this course.
