In a remarkable display of skill and dedication, two Electronic Engineering students from Gower College Swansea have secured medals in this year's WorldSkills UK (WSUK) National Finals.
Faroz Shahrokh, Rhys Lock, and Tarran Spooner, all pursuing the L3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies (Electronics pathway) at the Tycoch Campus, earned coveted spots in the Industrial Electronics finals following a successful initial round. At the finals, Tarran won Gold, while Faroz scooped Silver!
In the lead-up to the competition, the learners, under the expert guidance of WSUK Training Manager and College Electronic Engineering Curriculum Leader, Steve Williams, participated in weekly online training sessions with the rest of the Industrial Electronics UK squad. Additionally, they undertook in-class training as part of their curriculum, where skills competition preparation is embedded.
Steve Williams emphasised the significance of such competitions in honing the skills of the students: "Participation in WorldSkills not only enhances technical expertise but also instills a sense of confidence among our learners, " he remarked, thrilled by the success of the students. “As a College, we are so proud of the skill and determination that these learners have shown.”
This sentiment was echoed by Jenny Hill, Director of Skills Development and School Partnerships, who praised the students for their commitment to excellence: "Gower College Swansea is proud to foster an environment where students can excel not just academically but also in competitive arenas like WorldSkills," she stated. “We are so proud of these learners and can’t wait to follow their next steps.”
As the College anticipates the following stages of the competition, Tarran and Faroz will now enter the WSUK Squad and access the next level of training. Eventually, one squad member will be chosen to represent the UK in the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai.
